The World Health Organisation called for the evacuation of thousands of patients in dire need of immediate medical attention due to the severe restrictions placed by the Israeli occupation on the entry of medical aid and the evacuation of patients from the Gaza Strip.
According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, between 12,000 and 14,000 people in the Gaza Strip still require medical evacuation.
Ghebreyesus warned in an article on the “X” platform that if they do not receive the care they need, thousands more patients could die.
All parties are required by international humanitarian law to provide medical care to civilians during armed conflicts, and the Geneva Conventions declare it a war crime to obstruct the delivery of medical aid.
Nonetheless, the Israeli occupation of Gaza still maintains a restrictive blockade that keeps patients from receiving timely medical care, a blatant violation of their human rights.
As a result of the direct targeting of the medical infrastructure and the lack of basic supplies, the majority of hospitals in Gaza have closed, causing the medical sector to completely collapse.
Official figures show that since October 7, 2023, the war of extermination in the Gaza Strip has killed and injured over 160,000 people, primarily women and children, and left over 14,000 people missing beneath the debris.
Since international movements are still unable to impose practical solutions, the medical evacuation crisis and the ongoing humanitarian haemorrhage in Gaza serve as a living testament to the magnitude of the tragedy endured by Palestinians living under occupation. As a result, saving their lives is a moral and humanitarian obligation that demands immediate action.
