Neighbourhoods of Daraa city witnessed a large wave of displacement that began a week ago in Daraa Al-Balad, Al-Sad Road, and Al-Makama due to ongoing bombardments by the Syrian regime forces and its allies.
According to local sources, the number of displaced people has reached about 80% of the residents of the neighborhoods (about 50,000) in Daraa, southern Syria.
The sources added that those displaced must pass through a single checkpoint of the regime called “Al-Saraya”, with each family having to pay a bribe of two million Syrian pounds (about 625 dollars) to cross with their car.
Daraa governorate has witnessed an attack by Bashar Al-Assad’s forces and his allies since last July 29, which has left dozens of people dead.
On June 25, the Syrian regime forces and their affiliated militias imposed a siege on Daraa A-Balad area, after the opposition refused to hand over light weapons in violation of an agreement brokered by Russia in 2018, which stipulated the handing over of heavy and medium weapons.
On July 26, the Daraa Al-Balad Reconciliation Committee and the regime forces reached an agreement to partially hand over the remaining light weapons of the opposition, and a partial presence of the regime forces, but the latter violated the agreement and insisted on complete control of the area.
Syria’s civil war has been going on since March 18, 2011, when the regime of Bashar Al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.
Over the past years, the Syrian regime granted citizenship to a large number of members of groups affiliated with Iran, in return for joining Assad in the war he waged against the opposition since 2011.
Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK has repeatedly called for an end to the war in Syria, calling on the international community to put pressure on the Syrian and Russian military alliance to end the war, which claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent lives and displaced more than 10 million people.
