Two children were killed, and five others were wounded, as a result of attacks on Ma’rib Governorate, central Yemen, on Sunday.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund “UNICEF”, “Two brothers were killed and five other children were wounded, on Sunday, with the escalation of fighting in Ma’rib Governorate.”
“This is the largest number of children reported killed or injured in the area during months of heavy fighting in and around the city,” UNICEF confirmed.
It noted that attacks on civilians, including children, constitute a “violation of international humanitarian law.”
The United Nations called on all parties to the fighting in Marib and all of Yemen to protect children and preserve their lives.
The UN pointed to the killing and wounding of about 10,000 boys and girls since the return of violence to Yemen in 2015, without giving further details about this statistic.
Yemen has been witnessing a war for about 7 and a half years, which has claimed the lives of more than 233,000 people, and 80% of its population, numbering about 30 million, has become dependent on aid due to the worst humanitarian crisis in the world they are witnessing, according to the United Nations.
The conflict is further complicated due to the involvement of regional parties. Since March 2015, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been carrying out military operations in support of government forces against the Iranian-backed Houthis, who control several governorates, including the capital, Sanaa.
Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) has repeatedly called for an end to the war in Yemen, calling on the international community to pressure the parties to the conflict in Yemen to end the war, which claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.
