Approximately 1,620 Yemeni women were either killed or injured since the outbreak of the armed conflict in the country in 2014, a Yemeni governmental committee has reported.
The National Committee to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) affirmed that violence against Yemeni women has increased over the past seven years especially in Houthi-held areas.
1,620 women have been killed or injured since the start of the war in violation of the international humanitarian law, which strictly prevents any targeting of residential neighbourhoods, gatherings, and refugee camps, the NCIAVHR said.
The NCIAVHR further underlined that Yemeni women were subjected to systematic human rights violations including arbitrary detention, freedom restriction, and enforced disappearance.
The committee also said that (unidentified) armed groups have targeted women in their daily lives such as homes, residential neighbourhoods, and farms.
Women were also subjected to sexual harassment, forced displacement, forced marriage, and family detachment, according to the report.
The report comes as Yemen continues to be mired in a years-long conflict underway, which in addition to the loss of life is tearing apart livelihoods, social fabric, causing Yemen to teeter on the brink of famine, and resulting in widespread reversals of development progress.
