On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, Israeli bulldozers escorted by a large number of Israeli police forces demolished a Palestinian house in the East Jerusalem district of Sheikh Jarrah.
Israeli police forces violently stormed the neighbourhood and forcibly removed its residents and many supporters.
The Israeli bulldozers reduced the house of Mahmoud Salhiya to rubble and displaced his family after police forces assaulted them and several activists.
A large number of police forces stormed the house and arrested six individuals from the family of Salhiya and 20 activists, adding that police officers also assaulted members from the family and several activists during the raid.
The Israeli police cordoned off Sheikh Jarrah and the area where the house was located during and after the demolition.
The Salhiya family has earlier staged a vigil outside their house in protest against the Israeli demolition order.
The house was surrounded by Israeli policemen since Monday morning in an attempt to force the family out of their house.
However, the owner of the house, Mahmoud Salhiya, has threatened to blow up his house rather than be forced out of it.
European diplomats visit Sheikh Jarrah
Earlier Monday, a delegation of European representatives and diplomats visited the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in occupied Jerusalem, and met with Palestinian families threatened with Israeli eviction orders.
The delegation included the European Union’s envoy to Palestine, Sven KUEHN VON BURGSDORFF.
Tensions have run high in the Sheikh Jarrah area since last year after an Israeli court ordered the eviction of 28 Palestinian families in favour of Israeli settlers.
