The Egyptian prisoner of conscience Dr. Salah Soltan’s health situation has sharply deteriorated in an Egyptian prison.
Soltan, 63, an official in the government of former President Mohamed Morsy, suffers different health problems including hepatitis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other problems that make it difficult for him to walk or move.
He also suffers axial neck pain and hearing loss in one of his ears.
Despite his critical health condition, the prison authorities continue to deny his medical treatment.
Salah Soltan has been detained since September 2013 and has been subjected to enforced disappearance since June 15, 2020, punctuated by three brief supervised visits.
He was sentenced to life in prison in a September 2017 mass trial that was marred by extensive due process and fair trial violations.
In November 2018, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared Soltan’s detention arbitrary on the basis of numerous fair trial violations and called for his immediate release.
