Victims in Egypt continue to fall in all prisons and detention centres in Egypt due to the systematic violation of their rights, deliberate medical negligence and poor conditions of detention.
Emad Bayoumi Al-Shamandili, 55, died in his prison in Minya Al-Qamh Centre in Al-Sharqiya, after having a diabetic coma due to overcrowding in cells and the high temperatures.
On November 8, 2020, the Egyptian police arrested Emad and his son Islam in Alexandria and confiscated his personal documents and a large sum of money. They were subjected to enforced disappearance for 3 months, during which Emad was subjected to physical and psychological torture.
The Egyptian authorities abstained from providing any medical care for Emad who remained in a coma for 3 days in his cell, despite his cellmates’ calls to treat him urgently and transfer him to hospital.
The number of deaths in various prisons and detention centres this August has risen to 4, and to 29 since the beginning of this year.
Last July, 7 detainees died in prisons as a result of torture and deliberate medical negligence, in addition to dozens of political detainees in 2022, and hundreds of arbitrarily detained victims since the coup of July 3, 2013.
Deaths in Egyptian prisons and detention centres are increasing significantly, yet the Egyptian authorities deny the Red Cross Committee inspection of prison conditions, leaving detainees without any kind of control or monitoring, except for the Public Prosecution, which does not investigate crimes of torture, but has rather become a partner in covering up for the perpetrators.
