Practices such as forced disappearance and arbitrary detention routinely used against activists, journalists, and academics, with little regard for criticism from international organisations.
Saudi authorities have “disappeared” Abdullah Hajjaj al-Arini since December 2018, after he shared his opinion on Twitter.
The relevant tweets were deleted after his arrest.
The public prosecutor has still not presented a case or even arrest warrant against Al-Arini.
Details of neither the place nor the conditions of his detention have been released since December 2018.
Authorities have imposed a blackout on reporting of the condition of most detainees, though leaks have revealed a reality of widespread torture and other mistreatments.
Since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman took effective power in the Kingdom on 29 April 2015, numerous prominent activists and religious figures in the country have been subject to politicized arrests and detention on the basis of charges such as “conspiracy against the state”.
Such arrests have continued despite criticism from many international human rights organisations.
