The Jordanian political detainee Hamad Al-Kharshah has been suffering a serious health deterioration after 358 days on hunger strike.
Al-Kharshah’s family affirmed that his health condition reached unprecedented level, confirming that he could no longer breathe as he was placed under oxygen concentrators.
The family explained in a press statement that Al-Kharsha is unable to move, open his eyes, or breathe normally due to his ongoing strike implications.
The family pointed out that it submitted an official request to the International Red Cross to place him under international protection and supervision, and to follow up on his health status before it was too late.
According to the family, the Jordanian State Security Court has not yet made a decision regarding the bail application made by the Al-Kharsha defense team.
The case of Al-Kharshah prompts grave worries about Jordan’s human rights record. All detainees must be granted their right to justice, a fair trial, and adequate medical care by the Jordanian government.
The Jordanian authorities arrested Al-Kharshah on January 13, over social media posts, and transferred him to the State Military Security Court on charges of “undermining the regime.”
