During the ongoing aggression on southern Lebanon, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) killed a Lebanese woman and her child on Wednesday, February 21, in a raid on Majdal Zoun town.
Earlier this morning, the Israeli bombing renewed on a number of towns in southern Lebanon, including Tayr Harfa, Al-Jebeen, Alma Al-Shaab, Al-Dhahira, and Majdal Zoun.
The IOF also opened fire on the Labouneh and Al-Allam mountains in the western sector, while its aircraft were flying throughout the night and into the morning over the villages of Tire and Bint Jbeil.
The killing of the Lebanese citizen and her child by the IOF highlights the devastating impact of military actions on civilians, which represents a grave violation of international human rights laws and international humanitarian law.
International humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Conventions, prohibits attacks that do not distinguish between combatants and civilians, and obliges all warring parties to take all possible measures to spare civilians from the scourge of war. Targeting civilians directly constitutes a war crime under international law.
A comprehensive and independent investigation into this incident must be conducted to ensure holding those accountable to justice, and to redress the victims and their families. The international community must also intensify its efforts to protect civilians in conflict zones, and work to find permanent solutions that guarantee security and peace for all parties concerned.
