The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) arrested Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Aziz Dweik, a week after his release.
The IOF stormed al-Khalil, south of the occupied West Bank, and surrounded the family home of Dweik, 75, before violently arresting him.
Last Thursday; the IOF released Dweik at Al-Dhaheriya military checkpoint in al-Khalil after 6 months of detention.
Dweik was arrested on October 17, 2023, and placed in administrative detention for six months.
Administrative detention is a military decision that lasts for six months and can be extended under suspicion of posing a “security threat” without an indictment.
Dweik has experienced two kidney stone procedures involving catheterization and fragmentation, in addition to anemia and low hemoglobin caused by diabetes.
Dweik’s arrest, a week after his release, constitutes a clear violation of human rights and individual freedoms, as it is important for all individuals to enjoy their basic rights, including the right to freedom and not be subjected to arbitrary arrest or forced residence.
Human rights organizations and the international community must step in to press for the immediate and unconditional release of Dweik and other Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons following their arrest.
