On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Israeli occupation committed yet another horrific crime by launching two successive airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The attack killed at least 20 civilians, including five journalists, as well as paramedics and aid workers who had rushed to the scene to rescue the wounded.
The double strike, first targeting the hospital’s fourth floor, then striking the entrance where journalists and medics had gathered, offers damning evidence that the occupation is deliberately targeting media personnel and humanitarian workers. This is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and all conventions that protect civilians, medical staff, and relief workers.
Among the journalists killed in the attack were:
- Hossam Al-Masri (Reuters)
- Mariam Daqqa (Associated Press)
- Mohammad Salama (Al Jazeera)
- Moath Abu Taha (NBC News)
- Ahmed Abu Aziz (freelancer for Tunisian and Moroccan media)
This act is part of a brutal campaign to silence voices reporting the truth from Gaza and to erase evidence of war crimes. The targeting of journalists is not isolated—it follows a repeated pattern of assaults that have killed hundreds of medics and reporters since the start of the ongoing aggression on Gaza.
According to statistics from the Government Media Office in Gaza, 244 journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023, making this the deadliest war for media workers in modern history. Combined with the high number of paramedics and aid workers killed under Israeli bombardment, it reveals a deliberate policy to eliminate anyone engaged in humanitarian or professional efforts to protect civilians or document atrocities.
The continued silence of the international community, or its reliance on hollow statements of “concern” or generic condemnation, amounts to direct complicity and partnership in these crimes. It is long past time to end this shameful inaction and take concrete steps to halt Israeli occupation’s culture of impunity.
The scale and frequency of these atrocities, which amount to genocide, demand urgent international action. The UN Security Council, the European Union, and international institutions must immediately:
- Halt all arms supplies to Israeli occupation,
- Impose comprehensive sanctions, and
- Refer Israeli occupation leaders to the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and genocide.
The international community must also urgently provide protection mechanisms for civilians in Gaza, including journalists, medics, and humanitarian workers, ensuring they can carry out their duties without being deliberately targeted by Israeli airstrikes.
