AOHR UK Holds Israel Fully Responsible for His Life
The International Community Must Pressure Israel to End Its Policy of Arbitrary Administrative Detention
Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) said that it sent letters to the High Representative of the European Union’s Foreign Policy and the Secretary-General of the United Nations urging them to intervene immediately to save the life of the prisoner Maher Al-Akhras, whose health has severely deteriorated after completing 100 days of hunger strike seeking his freedom and to end his administrative detention.
AOHR UK stressed that Al-Akhras is currently bedridden at Kaplan Medical Center where he is struggling with death, as his health is constantly deteriorating. Maher started to gradually lose his hearing and sight. He also suffers shortness of breath and agonising pain all over his body, particularly in the head and chest.
In its letters, AOHR UK pointed out that time is running out, and the international community must address the dangers Al-Akhras’s life is going through and pressure Israel to respond to his just demands and release him immediately, since he is arbitrarily detained without any charge.
Al-Akhras, like other former administrative detainees, is facing the policy of administrative detention by going into an open hunger strike, which is the only way to pressure the occupation government to stop administrative detentions. Al-Akhras is practicing the rights guaranteed to him by international law, as Israel seeks to tear up the Palestinian society without any deterrence using its barbaric policies including the administrative detention, AOHR UK added.
AOHR UK pointed out that after the normalisation agreements with some Arab countries, Israel finds itself free to commit the violations and crimes it wishes against the Palestinian people to undermine their rights while destabilising the region, without being concerned about the consequences of its arbitrary policy.
