The Egyptian Cairo Criminal Court renewed the detention of the activist Sherif El-Rouby for 45 additional days, pending investigation related to case No. 1634 of 2022.
El-Rouby was charged with “joining a banned group and spreading false news,” a charge usually used by the Egyptian regime against its opponents.
During his trial, El-Rouby said that he had not received his medical treatment since his transfer to Al-Ashra prison, despite his difficult health situation.
El-Rouby suffers from Bell’s palsy, which affects his ability to speak.
El-Rouby was arrested on September 16, 2022, only three months after his release.
The Supreme State Security Prosecution accused him of “joining a terrorist group and spreading false news,” after a press statement he made in a TV program, in which he complained of his “distress” situation and his inability to find a job opportunity.
El-Rouby was arrested for the first time in 2016 on charges of unlawful assembly, he was later re-arrested in April 2018 on charges of “publishing false news and joining a terrorist group”, and for the third time in December 2020 on the charge he had previously been interrogated about.
El-Rouby’s continued imprisonment without due process poses a real threat to his life, and violates the rule of law.
