In a heart-wrenching display of armed conflict, Sudan once again bears witness to a devastating incident that has resulted in significant human casualties and profound suffering for innocent civilians.
The city of Al-Abyad, situated in North Kordofan State, has become the epicenter of a deadly confrontation, with four civilians losing their lives and 45 others sustaining injuries during intense clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, as reported by the Sudanese Doctors Union.
The harrowing events unfolded in the early hours of Friday, July 21st, as armed confrontations and mutual artillery shelling engulfed the streets of Al-Abyad. Regrettably, one shell struck the Al-Abyad Educational Hospital’s courtyard, dangerously close to the kidney dialysis center, while other projectiles hit the vicinity of Al-Daman Hospital, the Women and Maternity Hospital, and the Kuwaiti Hospital, leaving a trail of devastation and loss.
The clashes in Al-Abyad have persisted for several months, their destructive impact stretching far beyond the city’s borders. The death toll, largely composed of innocent civilians, has surpassed 3,000, and the number of internally displaced and refugee individuals has reached a staggering 3 million, rendering Sudan one of the world’s most impoverished nations, according to distressing reports from the Ministry of Health and the United Nations.
These atrocities are not only a tragic loss of human life but a blatant violation of fundamental human rights and a grave breach of international humanitarian law. The targeting of civilians and hospitals during conflicts is strictly forbidden, and such heinous acts warrant the immediate and unequivocal intervention of the international community to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further bloodshed.
