The Israeli occupation continues its genocidal campaign against civilians in the Gaza Strip, combining relentless bombardment, starvation, siege, and forced displacement to obliterate the population, under the watchful silence of the international community, which only deepens the tragedy.
Dire Warning from UNRWA
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warned that children in Gaza are “sentenced to death” if humanitarian aid does not urgently reach the population. Hunger levels have reached catastrophic stages, especially in northern Gaza, where nearly one million Palestinians remain.
Lazzarini noted that UNRWA health centres have reported a sixfold rise in cases of severe child malnutrition since March. “People in Gaza are already dying of hunger, and many more will follow,” he said.
Mass Displacement on the Rise
The United Nations reported that over 796,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced in Gaza since mid-March 2025. In just one week of August, nearly 17,000 new displacements were recorded, mostly from Gaza City, due to the intensifying military offensive. Attacks include the use of explosive-laden robots to destroy homes, along with artillery strikes and mass forced evacuations.
This wave of displacement is part of a wider Israeli strategy to reoccupy the Gaza Strip, starting with Gaza City. Already, 88% of Gaza’s territory has been declared under military evacuation orders, amounting to the effective forcible removal of most of its 2.3 million residents.
Genocide Beyond Warfare
The situation in Gaza now exceeds the scope of conventional warfare and falls within the legal definition of genocide under international law.
The deliberate starvation of children, systematic deprivation of food and medicine, and large-scale forced displacement fall under Article II of the 1948 Genocide Convention, which criminalises acts committed with the intent to destroy a population, in whole or in part.
The use of siege and starvation as methods of warfare directly targets civilians, constituting a compound crime against humanity and making it clear that Israeli occupation’s objective is not just military control—but demographic erasure.
A Humanitarian Catastrophe
Since 7 October 2023, Israeli ocupation’s military campaign has killed 62,192 Palestinians and injured 157,114 others, the majority being women and children. Over 9,000 remain missing under the rubble, and hundreds of thousands are enduring inhumane conditions as displaced persons. Forced famine has led to the deaths of 271 people, including 112 children.
The Call for Global Action
The continuation of these policies without meaningful international response places the world before a historic test. Silence now amounts to complicity. Failure to act is a failure to confront one of the most horrifying genocides of the modern era—unfolding in plain view.
