In a tragic reflection of the deepening humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced the deaths of two Palestinians and injuries to several others after a crowd of desperate civilians stormed one of its food warehouses in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, in search of food. The stampede occurred amid an intensifying famine caused by Israel’s ongoing blockade.
According to the WFP’s official statement, the large crowd, driven by extreme hunger, forcibly entered the facility in a desperate attempt to access any available food supplies. The chaos resulted in the loss of life and multiple injuries, underscoring the extreme levels of need and deprivation among Gaza’s 2.4 million residents.
This incident is not an isolated event but rather a grim indicator of a humanitarian crisis spiraling out of control. With Israel’s prolonged siege severely restricting the entry of food, medicine, and other basic necessities, the population is increasingly cut off from essential aid, leading to scenes of desperation and death.
What is unfolding in Gaza cannot be dismissed as a temporary humanitarian emergency — it is a systematic and deliberate policy of starvation and subjugation. The use of hunger as a weapon against civilians is a clear violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which strictly prohibit the use of starvation as a method of warfare. Article 54 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions explicitly states that “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is prohibited.”
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military campaign against the besieged enclave has led to nearly 177,000 Palestinians killed or wounded — the majority of them women and children — along with more than 11,000 missing, many believed to be trapped under rubble. The ongoing military operations have also resulted in the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians, leaving them in appalling humanitarian conditions.
What is taking place in Gaza amounts to acts of genocide. Israel’s campaign involves not only widespread bombardment but also the systematic destruction of critical infrastructure, denial of access to clean water and medical care, and the starvation of an entire population. Civilian infrastructure — including hospitals, schools, and shelters — continues to be targeted.
In light of these events, there is an urgent need for immediate and effective international intervention. The global community must act to halt the ongoing violations, secure safe humanitarian corridors for the delivery of food and medical aid, and protect civilians from further harm. The use of collective punishment — through siege, forced displacement, and starvation — is a crime that demands accountability and action.
The people of Gaza are paying the price for inaction and indifference. Without decisive international measures, the humanitarian catastrophe will only grow, and the principles of international law will continue to erode under the weight of unchecked atrocities.
