Gaza will need decades to repair what has been destroyed by the Israeli occupation. The ongoing Israeli occupation’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip has caused unprecedented destruction that will require decades to repair, as stated by the World Health Organisation.
The organisation’s spokesperson, Tariq Jasarevic, has reported that between 70-80% of the civil infrastructure in Gaza, including homes, hospitals, schools, and water facilities, has been destroyed or severely damaged. He emphasised that infrastructure repairs will take decades, in addition to the healthcare system, which is on the verge of collapse in Gaza. This dire situation is outlined on the official website of the organisation.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, debris removal in Gaza is expected to take between 3-12 years, Jasarevic added. Furthermore, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has estimated that the rehabilitation of Gaza’s economy, inclusive of the critical rebuilding of the healthcare system, will cost billions of dollars.
Jasarevic affirmed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) will persist in implementing its operational plan to support hospitals in Gaza, with a request for financial support amounting to $110 million.
It is worth noting that a study conducted by British and American universities has indicated that if a ceasefire is declared in the region, more than 11,500 people will die there by August next year due to epidemics, diseases, and injuries.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation forces have been waging a devastating war on Gaza, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, mostly among children and women. This war has also led to immense destruction of infrastructure and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, exacerbated by continuous bombardment and the blockade of food, water, medicine, and electricity supplies.
The Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights, endangering the lives and properties of civilians and causing immense suffering. This situation urgently demands decisive intervention from the international community to halt the aggression and protect civilians in the region.
