The detainee, Sameh Tolba, died inside the Zagazig Police Station in Sharkia governorate, where he was being held.
Tolba died due to the poor conditions of detention and the lack of medical care in prison, which led to the deterioration of his health until he died.
Tolba was held for two years pending investigations in a political case, and he remained in detention inside the Zagazif Police Station despite the passage of the legal period for his detention.
Since the beginning of 2023, the number of deaths in various Egyptian prisons and detention facilities has risen to 43.
Egyptian prisons, in general, lack health and hygiene, and most detainees suffer from severe overcrowding inside places of detention.
It should be noted that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that “prisoners deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity, and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human personality.”
