The suffering of political prisoners in Egyptian prisons continues amid harsh detention conditions, which violate international human rights standards, with increasing deaths inside prisons due to deliberate medical negligence and inhumane treatment.
The political prisoner Metwally Abu El-Magd Sulaiman, 57, died inside the high-security Gamasa Prison, after suffering a heart attack as a result of the deterioration of his health condition inside the prison.
Sulaiman worked as a freelance contractor, and held a BA in the Fundamentals of Religion from Al-Azhar University, and lived in Shubra El-Khema, Qalyubia, Egypt.
Sulaiman’s death came as a result of the inhumane detention conditions, which directly contributed to the deterioration of his health condition.
Sulaiman is the third political prisoner who died in prison in Egyptian prisons since the beginning of 2025, raising serious concerns about the continuation of medical negligence and ill-treatment inside prisons.
Earlier this year, political prisoner Saad El-Sayed Madin, 57, died in Borg Al-Arab Prison as a result of deliberate medical negligence and poor detention conditions. Prisoner Abdel Salam Saddouma, who was suffering from cancer, also died in Umm Al-Masryeen Hospital after his health deteriorated during his detention.
Sulaiman’s death is a reminder of the ongoing suffering of political prisoners, which requires the international community and human rights organisations to take action to pressure the Egyptian authorities to improve detention conditions, ensure respect for human rights, and release all prisoners of conscience.
