The Egyptian authorities arrested the father of activist Fajr Al-Adly, Alaa El-Din Saad Mohamed Al-Adly, 59, at Cairo Airport upon arrival from Germany on August 18, 2023.
The Egyptian authorities arrested the German resident who came for a family visit and detained him at the airport.
He was interrogated by the National Security, before being presented at the Supreme State Security Prosecution on Sunday, August 19, on charges of spreading false news and joining an outlawed group. The prosecution ordered his detention for 15 days pending investigations.
Fajr Al-Adly published posts on her social media accounts demanding the release of her father, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The security forces in Egypt had been targeting dissident living abroad upon their return to Egypt from different airports, especially Cairo international airport, as it seeks revenge against them for their activism or criticism of the current authorities.
In June 2015, 8 years ago, Fajr had interrupted a speech for Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in a press conference in Germany, and chanted against him.
Despite international laws and conventions that prohibit collective punishment, the Egyptian regime continues to target dissidents and their families, 10 years after Sisi came to power through a military coup.
