Deaths inside Egyptian Places of Detention since 03 July 2013 rise to 182
Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) stressed that the Egyptian authorities are fully responsible for the death of the young director “Shady Habash”, 22, inside Tora Investigation Prison in Saturday 02 May 2020. Habash died after his health severely deteriorated due to poor detention conditions. The prison administrations ignored the desperate calls for help by his cell mates until he finally died.
AOHR UK added that investigations into Habash’s death should take place immediately to find out reasons for his death, since he did not suffer from any serious illnesses before his arrest.
The Egyptian places of detention are designed to kill detainees inside it. They suffer inhumane conditions of detention where cells are dirty, poorly ventilated and overcrowded. In addition to this, Egyptian authorities deny detainees the right to visitations, sports, adequate food and water as well as the necessary means for personal hygiene and these practices puts the lives of detainees at risk, especially in the light of the spread of Corona pandemic.
AOHR UK confirmed that the number of detainees who died inside places of detention since 03 July 2013, including Habash, us 812, 26 of which died this year.
AOHR UK called the UN secretary General and the Special Rapporteur of Arbitrary Detention to intervene and put pressure on the Egyptian regime to release all those arbitrarily detained and to carry out urgent investigations into the increasing deaths inside Egyptian prisons and hold those responsible accountable.
