On Sunday, July 3, 2022, the Egyptian authorities re-arrested the activist, Aya Kamal El-Din, for the third time since 2013, when she was first detained along with a group of female protesters in a case that sparked a nationwide outcry.
Lawyer Mahienour Al-Masry affirmed that Aya was rounded up in total disregard to her difficult health situation, as she suffers severe asthma.
The 20-year-old Aya was released, says Al-Masry, from Egyptian prisons more than a year ago on health grounds.
However, she was re-arrested at dawn Sunday from her family house in Alexandria Governorate, and was brought before the Mansheya Prosecution.
Aya was first arrested in 2013 and sentenced to 11 years in prison. She was later given a suspended sentence of one year, the lawyer clarified.
“I don’t know who benefits from imprisoning a girl like Aya for the third time? Leave the poor girl to continue her life.”
Aya was among 14 young ladies who had been jailed in late October 2013 for 11 years for participating in anti-coup protests. They were later given suspended sentences of one year.
Authorities had accused them of property destruction, violent attacks on security forces and “instilling fear” in bystanders.
Aya was re-arrested in 2020 over a Facebook comment about the death of an army commander after catching Coronavirus. Aya was accused by pro-state media of criticizing President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
