Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons are subjected to harsh and inhumane detention conditions, which amount to slow execution.
Four Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip were reported dead today, Monday, bringing the total number of prisoners killed in a 24-hour period to five. This is the highest number of Palestinian prisoners killed since 1967, with 54 detainees having died since the war of extermination began in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
The four detainees died as a result of mistreatment and the harsh conditions in which they were detained, which were part of a systematic policy designed to cause them as much harm as possible.
Other conditions of detention include lack of access to medical care, physical and psychological torture, and the absence of the necessities for a decent life.
The detainees who have died include: Muhammad Rashid Akka (44), who was arrested in November 2023 while displaced from northern Gaza; Samir Mahmoud Al-Kahlout (52), who was arrested in October 2024 while in Kamal Adwan Hospital; Zuhair Omar Al-Sharif (58), who was arrested in October 2023 while working inside the occupied territories; and Muhammad Anwar Labad (57), who was arrested along with his family during his displacement south last November.
The persistence of these tactics draws attention to yet another facet of what observers have characterised as a systematic extermination campaign against all Palestinians, including detainees and civilians.
An immediate international investigation and full accountability for all parties involved are necessary as these violations are part of a dangerous escalation that aims to undermine the Palestinian presence and their fundamental rights, such as the right to life and physical integrity. They are also grave violations of international law and constitute war crimes.
