While Gaza continues to endure the ongoing Israeli aggression for over 14 months, the suffering of the sector’s residents worsens with the onset of winter, as children and their families face the risk of death due to severe cold and lack of shelter.
In this context, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, warned that Gaza’s children are at risk of death due to cold weather and lack of shelter, emphasizing that essential winter aid such as blankets and mattresses has been stuck for months due to Israeli authorities not allowing their entry.
In a post on the “X” platform, Lazzarini stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, accompanied by the provision of critical supplies that are urgently needed, highlighting the deaths of children due to severe cold in forcibly displaced tents.
According to statements from the Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir Al-Barsh, three Palestinian children died within a week due to the drop in temperatures in displacement tents. Among the victims was the two-week-old baby girl, “Sila Mahmoud Al-Faseeh,” who perished from the extreme cold in the “Al-Mawasi” area west of Khan Yunis.
In the same area, the child “Aisha Adnan Sufian Al-Qassas” also passed away, shedding light on the dire conditions faced by tens of thousands of displaced persons who rely on tents made of fabric and nylon amidst a scarcity of basic necessities.
This dire situation reflects a humanitarian catastrophe that demands urgent international action to save innocent lives and halt the ongoing genocide against Palestinians.
Amidst this humanitarian disaster, the international community cannot suffice with silence or symbolic condemnation. Concrete actions are required to immediately stop the aggression, open humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to Gaza, and hold those responsible for crimes accountable before international courts.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation has been waging a genocide war on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 153,000 Palestinians, including fatalities and injuries, mostly women and children, along with 11,000 missing persons. Tens of thousands of Palestinians in the northern part of the Strip are living in catastrophic conditions, with famine spreading and the collapse of all aspects of life.
