Gaza Municipality said on Saturday, 20 September 2025, that the intensifying Israeli attacks have worsened the city’s thirst crisis, with only about 25 percent of its daily water needs currently being met.
In a statement, the municipality explained that at present only around 25,000 cups of water are available each day; 15,000 cups supplied through the unstable “Mekorot” pipeline and 10,000 cups pumped from a few local wells that staff are still able to operate.
It added that most water and sewage networks have been severely damaged by the bombardment, while desalination plants have stopped working because of power cuts and fuel shortages.
Humanitarian organisations warn that the ongoing water crisis threatens to worsen health conditions and spread disease, especially in overcrowded shelters and the hard-hit northern areas.
In the same context, Gaza’s Ministry of Health announced on Friday that the number of deaths from malnutrition has risen to 440 people, including 147 children, noting four new deaths in the past 24 hours.
This comes as Israel has kept all crossings into the Strip closed since 2 March, preventing humanitarian aid from entering despite aid convoys piling up at its borders.
Since 7 October 2023, Israel has continued its war on Gaza with US support, killing more than 65,000 Palestinians and injuring over 166,000, most of them women and children, in addition to the displacement of hundreds of thousands and the deaths of hundreds due to famine.
