The Gaza Strip witnessed a serious escalation on Sunday as Israeli occupation forces carried out intensified attacks that resulted in the killing of nine Palestinians and the injury of others with varying degrees of severity. The developments come amid continued indiscriminate shelling and home demolitions across several residential neighbourhoods in both the northern and southern parts of the Strip.
Medical sources reported that four Palestinians were killed and others injured when occupation forces bombed a tent sheltering displaced persons in the Al-Falouja area west of Jabalia, in northern Gaza. In a separate incident, four more civilians were killed in shelling targeting areas south of Khan Younis.
In a related development, occupation forces continued the demolition of homes north of Gaza City, while artillery shelling targeted the Al-Sanafour junction in the Al-Tuffah neighbourhood east of the city, underscoring ongoing grave violations of civilians’ rights and of international humanitarian law.
These attacks form part of a continued pattern of breaches of the ceasefire agreement that entered into force on 11 October, with hundreds of violations recorded since then. According to the latest figures issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Health last Wednesday, these violations have resulted in the killing of approximately 591 people and the injury of 1,598 others.
The incidents reflect a persistent disregard for international law and human rights standards, including the fundamental principles prohibiting the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The Geneva Conventions and international human rights instruments oblige parties to armed conflicts to protect civilian populations and ensure emergency protection for displaced persons and the wounded.
The demolition of homes and the use of excessive force also constitute a clear breach of the principle of military proportionality, potentially engaging the criminal responsibility of occupation leaders under international law.
This escalation occurs within the broader context of a genocidal war launched by Israeli occupation forces since 8 October 2023, which has resulted in more than 72,000 Palestinian deaths, over 171,000 injuries, and massive destruction affecting approximately 90 per cent of civilian infrastructure, with reconstruction costs estimated by the United Nations at around USD 70 billion.
The continued attacks once again expose the scale of systematic human rights violations in Gaza and underscore the urgent need for international accountability mechanisms to address ongoing impunity and halt the cycle of violence and humanitarian suffering.
