In a further incident underscoring the continued violations in the Gaza Strip, a 27-year-old Palestinian woman has died after sustaining critical gunshot wounds inflicted by Israeli occupation forces in the city of Beit Lahia, northern Gaza.
Medical sources confirmed that Basma Aram Banat succumbed to a direct gunshot injury. Ambulance and rescue crews continue to operate under extremely difficult conditions, facing severe obstacles in reaching a number of wounded individuals and victims trapped beneath rubble or lying in the streets, due to imposed security restrictions and ongoing shelling.
With Banat’s killing, the total number of Palestinians killed since the ceasefire came into effect has risen to 614, while the number of injured has exceeded 1,643. Since the beginning of the assault on 7 October 2023, the death toll has reached 72,072 Palestinians, with more than 171,741 injuries recorded.
Such incidents constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which obliges the occupying power to protect civilians and refrain from directly targeting them.
The United Nations Charter affirms the right of peoples to life and security, and prohibits attacks that result in the killing or injury of civilians without distinction. The occupation’s failure to uphold its obligations towards the local population amounts to a violation of international conventions governing the protection of civilians in armed conflict, including the four Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.
These acts further expose a pattern of neglect and failure to protect civilians, particularly through restrictions imposed on ambulance and relief teams, which exacerbate casualties and obstruct the provision of urgent medical assistance.
International law underscores the obligation to hold accountable any party found responsible for targeting civilians or obstructing humanitarian aid, including through international and criminal judicial mechanisms.
Gaza remains besieged by ongoing violations against its civilian population, with mounting casualties and injuries, while the fundamental right to life and humanitarian protection continues to be gravely threatened. This reality underscores the urgent necessity of international accountability and sustained pressure to ensure the protection of civilians and compliance with international law.
