In a tragic new development that underscores the depth of the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, the Government Media Office in Gaza has announced that more than 20,000 children have been killed over the past two years in the Israeli occupation military assault on the enclave, one of the most horrifying mass atrocities of the modern era.
This figure reflects the scale of the total humanitarian collapse and reveals a pattern of systematic killing targeting civilians, making the classification of events in Gaza as genocide entirely consistent with international legal standards.
According to statistics from the media office, the Israeli occupation military campaign has not only killed tens of thousands of civilians but has also systematically destroyed life-sustaining infrastructure. Thirty-eight hospitals and 96 health centres have been rendered inoperative due to direct airstrikes. Additionally, 197 ambulances have been targeted or destroyed, signalling a deliberate policy to dismantle the healthcare system.
Humanitarian workers have not been spared. 1,670 medical personnel have been killed in the line of duty, alongside 254 journalists and 140 civil defence workers—a stark indication of intentional targeting of those attempting to save lives or document the atrocities.
The devastation has extended to religious and community institutions, with 835 mosques completely destroyed, three churches repeatedly bombed, and 40 cemeteries attacked, revealing a clear intent to erase the cultural and spiritual identity of the Palestinian people.
In terms of housing, the destruction is staggering: 268,000 housing units have been fully demolished, while 148,000 have been rendered uninhabitable, leaving over 288,000 families displaced in what amounts to mass forced displacement and the erasure of viable life in the territory.
According to the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, any act committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group constitutes genocide, whether through killing or by imposing living conditions calculated to bring about the group’s destruction.
All components of genocide are clearly present in Gaza: intent is reflected in public statements by Israeli occupation officials about “erasing Gaza” and “cleansing” it; physical acts are evident in the mass killings, siege, and destruction of vital infrastructure; and the outcome is the collective annihilation of a civilian population under blockade, starvation, and bombardment.
In this context, the silence of the international community amounts to active complicity. Several global powers continue to provide political and military support to Israeli occupation despite overwhelming evidence of crimes tantamount to genocide.
This silence not only renders international humanitarian law meaningless but also entrenches a global system of political impunity, undermining public faith in justice and human rights.
