The head of the orthopedic department at Al-Shifa Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, Dr. Adnan Al-Barsh, 50, was tortured to death in Israeli prisons.
Al-Barsh was assassinated in Ofer Prison near Ramallah in the West Bank on April 19, but his death was not announced until Thursday.
The Israeli forces arrested Dr. Al-Barsh last December from Al-Awda Hospital along with a group of doctors.
Al-Barash was hit and injured in an Israeli attack on the Indonesian hospital about five months ago.
Alongside Al-Barsh’s murder, 33-year-old Palestinian prisoner Ismail Abdel Bari Rajab Khader died as a result of medical negligence and torture as part of the ongoing crime of enforced disappearance.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza condemned Al-Barash’s death “under torture” in Israeli prison.
Al-Barash’s murder brings the death toll in the health sector in Gaza Strip since October 7 to 492 people.
The death of Dr. Adnan Al-Barash and Ismail Khadr brought to 18 the number of deaths in Israeli custody since the start of the Israeli aggression.
Since October 7, the Israeli occupation army has waged a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which has left an enormous humanitarian catastrophe and a major health and environmental disaster.
The Israeli aggression on Gaza constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights, as it puts the lives of civilians, including women and children, at serious risk, and inflicts great suffering upon them.
The crimes of the occupation against Palestinian civilians require immediate action by the international community and human rights organisations to prosecute the Israeli occupation and hold it accountable for these crimes.
