Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz has reaffirmed his government’s categorical rejection of a Palestinian state, a position that directly contradicts international law and the widely recognised Palestinian right to self-determination. His statement underscores Israel’s continued policy of occupation and annexation, defying global diplomatic efforts to establish lasting peace in the region.
Katz made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the United States Senate, as Israeli forces continue to commit widespread human rights violations against Palestinians in both the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. Speaking at the meeting, he stated, “Israel will never agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state that threatens its existence,” according to Israel in Arabic, a platform operated by Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
Since the outbreak of Israel’s military offensive on 7 October 2023, official rhetoric rejecting Palestinian statehood and advocating for the annexation of the occupied West Bank has grown increasingly aggressive. The war has resulted in approximately 160,000 Palestinian casualties, including women and children, with 14,000 others still buried under the rubble. The humanitarian crisis has been further exacerbated by severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean drinking water, in blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
At the same time, Israeli forces have intensified their repression in the West Bank, conducting widespread arrests, home demolitions, forced displacements, and the imposition of military blockades—actions that meet the legal definition of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Efforts to forcibly alter the demographic landscape of Palestine have also gained traction. Prominent Israeli and American political figures, including former US President Donald Trump, have openly advocated for the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza to neighbouring countries, a proposal that directly violates Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the forced transfer of populations under occupation.
Despite mounting international pressure, Israel continues to enjoy unwavering diplomatic and political protection, particularly from the United States, which consistently blocks any attempts to hold it accountable before international courts. To date, Israel has faced no serious repercussions for its policies of occupation, racial discrimination, and systematic repression, despite its actions being classified as apartheid by leading human rights organisations.
Israel’s continued refusal to recognise a Palestinian state, alongside its policies of territorial expansion and forced displacement, presents the international community with a moral and legal dilemma. These actions violate key United Nations resolutions, including Resolution 242 and General Assembly Resolution 194, further highlighting Israel’s blatant disregard for international law and its determination to entrench the occupation.
