The Israeli occupation army has launched its most extensive assault in two months on Syrian territory between Monday and Tuesday night, targeting at least 41 military sites, the majority of which belong to the Syrian regime.
This latest escalation represents a continued violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law, with Israeli ocupation citing alleged security threats in southern Syria as justification for its military actions.
According to an Israeli military statement, the airstrikes targeted radar installations, surveillance infrastructure, and military command centres, claiming these sites were being used to reinforce Syria’s defensive capabilities.
The strikes also hit weapons depots inside Brigade 12 in Izra‘ and Battalion 89 in Jabab, directly targeting Syria’s military infrastructure. Such actions constitute a serious breach of the UN Charter, which explicitly prohibits the use of force in international relations and underscores the principle of state sovereignty.
This latest offensive comes amid Israeli efforts to exploit ongoing instability in Syria, with Tel Aviv pushing a narrative suggesting that certain Alawite factions have called for Israeli intervention to ensure their protection. Analysts view this as an attempt to stoke sectarian divisions and further destabilise the country.
The Israeli continued preemptive strike policy in Syria contravenes Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force or threats against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
Moreover, launching military strikes on sovereign territory without explicit UN authorisation constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which expressly prohibit acts of aggression without legal justification.
The indiscriminate nature of these ongoing Israeli airstrikes also poses a grave threat to Syrian civilians, leaving entire communities in a constant state of fear and uncertainty.
According to local activist Ahmed Al-Masalmeh from Daraa, the bombardment lasted for several hours, further destabilising the already volatile situation on the ground.
With the continued escalation, Syrian civilians remain trapped between Israeli airstrikes and the country’s internal instability, as their towns and cities are transformed into battlegrounds for regional power struggles.
Fares Al-Hariri, a resident of the area, noted that the latest airstrikes were not defensive in nature, but rather a response to the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), suggesting that the Israeli military actions are driven by broader political and strategic interests.
Since there has not been a strong international reaction to Israeli persistent violations of Syrian sovereignty, Israel has been able to carry on with its military actions without consequence.
There is an urgent need for international human rights organisations and UN bodies to conduct an immediate investigation into potential war crimes and systematic violations committed by the Israeli occupation against civilians and critical infrastructure in Syria.
