The Israeli occupation has renewed its air strikes in Lebanon, targeting civilians and civilian vehicles, in a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights, including the right to life and bodily integrity. These attacks pose a direct threat to the lives of innocent people and their property.
In its latest act of aggression, the Lebanese National News Agency reported that two people were killed on Thursday after an Israeli drone struck a minibus on the Housh al-Sayyid Ali road in the Hermel district of eastern Lebanon. The bodies were transferred to Al-Petrol Hospital in the city, while eyewitnesses said the victims were killed instantly in the attack.
Later, the Israeli army’s spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, stated that the operation carried out by army units and the Shin Bet in the Nasiriyah area targeted what he described as a “terrorist operative”, which is a pretext frequently invoked by the occupation to justify attacks on densely populated civilian areas.
The attack follows a similar strike carried out shortly after midnight on Wednesday, when a car was targeted in the town of Janata in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, resulting in the injury of a passer-by, who was taken to hospital.
These brutal strikes underscore the continued targeting of civilians, including civilian vehicles, constituting a direct breach of international humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibits deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects.
Such conduct also represents a grave violation of civilians’ fundamental rights, exposing them to severe risks to their lives and safety, and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to protect civilians, as well as to ensure accountability for those responsible for the human and material losses caused by these attacks.
These developments once again draw attention to the fragility of civilian protection in conflict zones and the pressing necessity of adhering to international humanitarian law, refraining from actions that endanger civilians, and guaranteeing the protection of fundamental human rights at all times.
