Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) highlighted the exposed position of the Jordanian government on the Israeli genocide against the people of the Gaza Strip. It stressed that official statements, especially that of the Foreign Minister Safadi are nothing but lies to avoid Jordanian people’s outrage.
Today, Safadi made statements criticising lack of action by the Security Council and the international community on the removal of newborns, the injured and displaced from Shifa Medical Complex and held Israel responsible, however, these statements remain empty if it is not followed by actions.
The actions Safadi and his government can take to support the victims in the Gaza Strip is file a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice on the genocides it commits, but issuing statements calling on the Security Council and the International Criminal Court to take action and hold Israel responsible is deceptive, since Safadi knows that these agencies will not take any action.
Filing this case would neither stop the war immediately nor deter Israel, but it is an important step that supports the statements and is a warning to Israel that action has been taken to criminalise it.
Despite not indicating that it would take such a step, the Jordanian government played a malicious role in preventing the final statement of the Arab and Islamic Summit from including practical steps, including going to the International Court of Justice, severing diplomatic relations and ending all forms of normalisation, and establishing mechanisms to open the Rafah crossing for the humanitarian relief convoys and to present a draft resolution before the General Assembly in its emergency session to impose an immediate ceasefire.
It is worth noting that the rate of Jordanian officials’ empty statements increase in parallel with the increased Israeli crimes against the Palestinians, as happened today with the besieging of Al-Shifa Hospital, storming it, and targeting the sick, wounded, and children, in order to avoid popular resentment.
Jordan is one of the few countries that the US used as a station for transporting heavy weapons and military equipment which Israel needs in its war on Gaza. Moreover, the Jordanian government suppressed protests, and carried out arrest campaigns against hundreds of those rejecting the genocide in Gaza.
Likewise, the Egyptian regime’s position on the events is consistent with the crimes committed by Israel. Since the first day of the aggression, Sisi refused to open the Rafah crossing for the relief convoys, the entry of medical teams, and the evacuation of the wounded without Israel’s approval. Closing the crossing and subjecting it to Israel’s will is not a precedent, and it has contributed to exacerbating the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
During the previous Israeli wars on the Gaza Strip, aid and foreign medical teams entered through the Rafah crossing without any oversight or permission from Israel, but in this war the regime has changed its policy and helped to besiege and suffocating Gaza even more, thus becoming a partner in the genocide in Gaza, for which the officials responsible should be held accountable.
