The Public Prosecutor of the Military State Security Court rejected the bail request to release of the former mayor of Maan, activist Majid Fawaz Al-Sharari, for the seventh time in a row, and added a new charge against him for disturbing public transportation network.
The State Security Court had charged Al-Sharari with serious charges for his participation in organising peaceful sit-ins to demand a reduction in fuel prices.
The charges included “undermining the political system of government and inciting opposition, carrying out terrorist acts that endanger national and economic resources, illegal gathering, and obstructing the provision of public services that threaten national security or public safety.”
The Jordanian authorities arrested Majed Al-Sharari on December 18, 2022, after participating in the truck strike in protest against the increase in fuel prices.
Jordan has recently witnessed widespread protests against a government decision to raise fuel prices, dispute the difficult economic crisis the country, and the increase in unemployment and poverty rates.
