The strike of political detainees, brothers Khaled and Hamza Walid Al-Juhani, has entered its 14th day, in protest against their arbitrary detention in Jordanian prisons.
Since the moment of their arrest, Al-Juhani brothers announced going on a hunger strike, in protest against their arrest without a charge by the Jordanian authorities.
The arrest of Khaled Al-Juhani came days after announcing his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The two brothers are active in events in solidarity with Gaza, which has been subjected to a war of extermination since October 7, 2023.
Their brother, Mustafa Al-Juhani, said that thw health if his brothers are deteriorating severely, where Khaled submitted a request two days ago to be seen by a kidney specialist, but his request has not been met yet, and his brother Hamza was complaining of colon pain, which intensified as the strike continued.
Over the past few months, the security services dispersed several peaceful sit-ins, arrested many protesters, and forced them to sign pledges not to participate again.
Dispersing peaceful sit-ins and arresting protesters and those calling for it is a violation of international standards, as international law stipulates the right of individuals to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and suppression or violence against demonstrators is a violation of human rights.
The arrest of activists and protesters in peaceful sit-ins without any legal basis is a violation of their rights, as the arrest must be based on specific legal foundations according to international law.
The Jordanian authorities should adhere to international legal standards and guarantee the rights of demonstrators and activists to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and freedom from violence, torture, or cruel or inhuman treatment during arrest or detention, hold those responsible for any human rights violations accountable, and provide justice for victims.
