Saudi academic Dr. Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khudairi has been held in Saudi jails for seven years.
Al-Khudairi was arrested from his family house on September 11, 2017, on several charges that include disobeying the ruler; delivering a Friday sermon in Qatar; and building mosques in several countries.
Al-Khudairi holds a PhD in Fundamentals of Religion. He worked as a teaching assistant and lecturer in the Department of Qur’anic Studies at the Teachers College in Riyadh. He also served as chairman of the board of directors of the Center for Consultations.
Al-Khudairi was detained during the September 2017 arrest campaign, the largest crackdown carried out in the Kingdom.
The list of detainees includes the academics Dr. Salman Al-Awda, Dr. Awad Al-Qarni, the academic at the Higher Institute for the Judiciary, Abdulaziz Al-Fawzan, the imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saleh Al-Talib, and Dr. Safar Al-Hawali.
It also included the economists Essam Al-Zamil, Abdullah Al-Maliki, Jamil Farsi, and Mustafa Al-Hassan, who was later released on health grounds.
Journalists and human rights activists are also included on the list.
Saudi Arabia imposes a complete blackout on the detention circumstances of many detainees in the wake of leaked accounts of torture and mistreatment.
