The United Nations continued issuing warnings about the worsening food crisis in the Gaza Strip, while the Israeli occupation continues ignoring all its warnings since the beginning of its war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
James McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator ad interim for the Occupied Palestinian Territory warned of “serious acute malnutrition” in northern parts of Gaza.
On Wednesday, March 6, McGoldrick emphasised in a statement that the hygiene, health conditions, and food shortages in the Gaza Strip affect the most vulnerable people in the region.
McGoldrick pointed out to the deaths due to hunger in Gaza confirmed in many reports, including a 14-day-old infant who died from starvation.
“In a camp, I met yesterday with a woman who stressed how unhappy and concerned they were that they were unable to celebrate Ramadan properly”, he said.
“We have to fix things so much in the context of Gaza for women, for children, for vulnerable groups, the disabled and others,” he added, while warning of “catastrophic levels” of hunger in northern parts of Gaza.
He stressed the need to increase humanitarian aid, saying “we have to get up to at least 300 trucks a day,” while Israel prevents all aids from reaching the besieged Strip.
He pointed out that chronic diseases have become widespread in Gaza, and that the health care system is in a state of stagnation.
The Israeli aggression and the restrictions of the Israeli occupation had led the residents of Gaza, especially the Gaza and northern governorates to be on the verge of famine, given the scarcity of food, water, medicine and fuel supplies, and resulted in the displacement of about two million Palestinians from the Strip, which has been besieged by the occupation for 17 years.
The right to food is guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which requires the international community and humanitarian institutions to provide the necessary food aid to the people of Gaza.
