On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, the Egyptian authorities arrested the journalist Hassan Al-Qabbani from his family home in Giza Governorate.
Al-Qabbani was taken to an unknown place, after the Egyptian security forces broke into his home.
There was no additional information provided regarding his charge. But it seems to be connected to his Facebook posts calling for the release of all journalists held in Egyptian jails.
Al-Qabbani was previously detained twice on grounds of free speech.
The arrest of Al-Qabbani comes on World Press Freedom Day and just as the nation’s national dialogue has begun, which highlights how precarious the dialogue is.
Egypt is ranked 166th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2023 World Press Freedom Index.
Since Abdul Fattah Sisi took office, dozens of Egyptian journalists have been imprisoned and languishing in jail.
