On World Children’s Day, on 20 November of every year, the global call is renewed to safeguard children’s rights, uphold their dignity, and ensure their access to education, play, and a life free from fear. Yet the Palestinian reality this year presents a starkly different picture, one in which childhood has become among the most afflicted and endangered victims of the Israeli assault.
According to a statement issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education, more than 19,000 schoolchildren have been killed, while around 28,000 others have been injured since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on 7 October 2023.
Hundreds of schools, kindergartens, and child-care centres have also been struck in the bombardment, some entirely destroyed, others partially damaged across both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
These numbers carry stories of children deprived of their basic right to education, to safety, and to grow up without fear. They stand as living testimonies to a reality that contradicts the very principles upon which World Children’s Day was founded nearly 70 years ago.
While nations around the world celebrate their achievements in child welfare, protection, and care, Palestinian children continue to face daily violations. In Gaza, children are killed beneath the rubble or in the very schools to which they fled seeking safety. In Jerusalem and the West Bank, arrests, injuries, and shootings targeting minors persist with no deterrent.
These violations are no longer confined to military operations alone; they have become part of a grim daily reality that reflects the absence of the basic protections every child is meant to enjoy under universal humanitarian principles.
On World Children’s Day, the world is facing a moral responsibility that tests the credibility of its commitment to justice and humanity. Palestinian childhood does not need ceremonial slogans, but immediate protection, serious accountability, and an international will capable of safeguarding what remains of children’s right to life.
