In a harrowing revelation early this morning, CNN released a report uncovering the dire conditions at the Sde Teiman detention centre in Israel’s Negev desert, where hundreds of Palestinians are reportedly being held under severe and inhumane conditions.
The report, which draws on the accounts of three Israeli whistle-blowers who previously worked at the facility, details a grim scene: rows of Palestinian men clothed in gray tracksuits, blindfolded and seated on thin mattresses, surrounded by barbed wire. These men, according to the whistle-blowers, are subjected to strict prohibitions including no movement, no talking, and constant surveillance under the harsh glare of floodlights.
One Israeli source, disturbed by the ongoing abuses, described the facility’s atmosphere as filled with a “putrid stench” while detainees mumbled to themselves under the oppressive rules enforced by the guards. The source further revealed orders given to the guards to target and punish ‘problematic’ detainees without a clear justification, highlighting a culture of cruelty and punishment rather than lawful detention.
Moreover, the whistle-blowers revealed disturbing medical malpractices at the centre’s field hospital. Reports of amputations resulting from the prolonged use of handcuffs and substandard medical care by underqualified staff paint a picture of gross negligence and abuse. One whistle-blowers, a former medic at the facility, described it as “a paradise for interns” due to the unprofessional handling of serious medical procedures, “It is a paradise for interns because it’s like you do whatever you want.”
The facility, located roughly 18 miles from the Gaza frontier, holds Palestinians detained during Israel’s extensive military operations since October 7. These operations and the conditions at detention centres like Sde Teiman have sparked international outrage, casting further doubt on Israel’s adherence to international human rights standards.
Israeli and Palestinian rights groups have already condemned the conditions at Sde Teiman, prompting an outcry that has now reached global audiences through major news outlets. The facility operates under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law, allowing for the extended detention of individuals without trial—a practice that has been heavily criticised for violating basic human rights.
This CNN report adds significant weight to ongoing calls from international human rights organisations for urgent reforms and the cessation of abusive practices in detention facilities across the region. The international community, along with local activists, continues to demand transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights from the Israeli authorities.
