The Syrian regime and its Russian allay continue to kill Syrian civilians with various types of weapons, in clear violation of the de-escalation agreement.
A civilian was killed and another injured, as the Syrian regime forces and Russian-backed militias targeted a gathering of civilians while collecting firewood in the northeastern countryside of Lattakia, northwestern Syria.
A Russian missile, “Cornet A-M”, killed Subhi Zuhuri and wounded Subhi Khalilo, who were displaced from the countryside of Latakia.
Over the past two years dozens of civilians have been killed and injured, most of them were farmers harvesting their agricultural crops, in addition to civilians who were collecting firewood for a living, or to provide heating for their families in winter.
The regime forces, targeted with artillery the towns of Al-Fatira, Sufohen, Benin, Kansafra, Fleifel, and Kafr Awaid in the Jabal Al-Zawiya area in the southern countryside of Idlib, in conjunction with an intense flight of Russian reconnaissance planes over the area.
In May 2017, Turkey, Russia, and Iran announced an agreement to establish a “de-escalation zone” in Idlib and parts of the countryside of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia, within the Astana meetings related to the Syrian issue.
However, the Syrian regime forces and their supporters attack the area, despite the ceasefire agreement signed on March 5, 2020.
Over the past years, the Syrian regime has granted citizenship to many groups affiliated with Iran, in exchange for their participation in the war it has waged against the opposition since 2011.
