The Saudi authorities arrested Egyptian lawyer Islam Osama Sobhi, who published a video clip about Hajj deaths, after he voluntarily surrendered himself to the Saudi authorities through the Egyptian embassy in Jeddah.
In a video clip, Islam’s father, Osama Sobhi, confirmed that his son would be brought before the Public Prosecution in Mecca. He then called on attorneys in Saudi Arabia or Egypt to defend him.
Islam’s father had published another video, in which he called on the Saudi authorities to expedite investigations into his son and take into account his deteriorating health condition, confirming that he was suffering from cancer.
Lawyer Islam had published a video clip in which he revealed the Saudi authorities’ negligence during the Hajj season, which led to a large number of deaths among pilgrims.
Regarding the arrest of attorney Islam, it is important to highlight that the Saudi authorities must uphold his right to free speech and human rights, cease his unjustified detention, give him legal counsel, and make it easier for his attorney to obtain the information they need.
Islam Sobhi needs to receive the required medical attention while he is being held by the Saudi authorities, given that he suffers from cancer.
Along with upholding Islam’s rights and adhering to the proper legal procedures, the Saudi authorities must conduct an open and impartial investigation into this case.
