More than 117,000 Sudanese have been displaced, with over 32,000 buildings partially or completely damaged due to floods and rains since last June.
The International Organization for Migration stated in a release that “from 1 June to 12 August of this year, rains and floods have caused sudden displacement in Sudan.”
“The rains and floods have led to the displacement of approximately 117,835 individuals in 12 different states out of the 18 states in Sudan.” the organization added.
The statement clarified that around 32,611 buildings have been partially or completely damaged by the floods and rains.
Last Wednesday, the Ministry of Health announced an increase in the death toll due to floods that have hit several states from 68 to 76 since last June.
The damages from this year’s floods coincide with ongoing hardships in the African country due to the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, resulting in over 18,800 fatalities and nearly 10 million internally displaced persons and refugees, according to the United Nations.
Calls from both the UN and international bodies are escalating to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan that is pushing millions toward famine and death due to food shortages resulting from the conflict that has spread to 12 states.
