On Friday, December 24, 2021, the Tunisian Court of First Instance issued its verdict in absentia against the lawyer and ex-MP Bushra Belhaj Hemeda in a case filed against her in 2012.
This came only two days after she launched a fierce attack against Tunisian President Kais Saied for being behind a court’s order sentencing former president Moncef Marzouki to four years in jail.
The case filed against Belhaj Hemeda dates back to 2012 by the former Minister of Sports Tarek Diab, who himself expressed his discontent over the verdict, emphasizing that he will take the necessary measures to dismiss the case.
The Tunisian judiciary under Kais Said has been actively and arbitrarily used against the prominent figures of the opposition.
Two days ago, on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, a Tunisian court has sentenced former president Moncef Marzouki to four years in jail on charges of “conspiring against state security.”
A week after, current President Kais Saied asked the justice minister to initiate a judicial investigation against ‘those who plot against Tunisia abroad.’
Since his sweeping decisions announced on July 25, President Kais Saied has repeatedly pointed his finger at judicial authorities.
