Today, the Tunisian authorities arrested the acting head of the Ennahda Movement, Munther Al-Wanisi, and the head of its Shura Council, Abdel Karim Al-Harouni.
A security force stopped Al-Wanisi while driving his car and took him to an unknown destination.
Al-Harouni’s arrest poses a threat to his life, as his health condition is critical, according to a statement by the movement.
Meanwhile, the Tunisian authorities continue to detain the head of the movement, Rashid Ghannouchi, and his two deputies, Ali Al-Areedh and Noureddine Al-Buhairi, for several months on various politically motivated charges.
The Tunisian authorities closed the headquarters of the Ennahda movement in the capital and the other governorates and prevents holding any meeting there.
Political tensions in Tunisia had escalated since President Kais Saied issued decisions to freeze parliament and dismiss the government in July 2021, in clear violation of the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and respect for citizens’ rights and fundamental freedoms.
These political arrests require pressure by all human rights organisations and the international community on Kai’s Saied to abide by the principles of human rights, democracy and citizens’ freedom, and for his authorities to stop harassing and arresting political activists and opponents.
