Three UN Special Rapporteurs issued a joint letter in which they expressed concern over the human rights situation in Bahrain, as well as the serious health deterioration of Bahraini political detainee Abduljalil Al-Singace.
The letter issued by the Special Rapporteur on Physical and Mental health, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, and the Special Rapporteur on People with Special Needs, had been sent to the Bahraini government, in which they expressed their deep concern about the deteriorating health condition of Al-Singace, his continued detention, and the confiscation of his research.
A recent report was also issued by the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Defenders highlighting the retaliatory measures taken against human rights defenders in Bahrain, and their detention for prolonged periods, for expressing their views and seeking to stop human rights violations. The report called for the unconditional release all human rights defenders detained in Bahrain prisons.
According to human rights sources, Al-Singace announced going into an open hunger strike, in protest of the humiliating treatment he was subjected to by the officer in charge in Jaw Prison, who confiscated the research Al-Singace spent four years writing, in addition to preventing him from making phone calls.
Al-Singace suffers from polio syndrome and sickle cell anaemia, which cause him chronic pain, numbness in the extremities, and shortness of breath, leading to the serious deterioration of his health condition.
It is worth noting that the Coronavirus was spread in prison due to the failure of the prison administration to take the necessary health measures to protect detainees, even following the death of the detainee Hussein Barakat, who died after being infected with the virus.
