The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that the number of displaced people reached 120 million globally until May 2024.
This came in UNHCR report on the displacements in 2024, in which it indicated that last year’s numbers reached new historical levels throughout the world.
The Commission pointed out that Syria remains the “largest displacement crisis” in the world, with 13.8 million people displaced inside and outside Syria.
She stressed that the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, the Gaza Strip and Myanmar have led to new displacements, which require “urgent” solution.
She pointed out that the number of displaced people is equivalent to the population of Japan, which ranks 12th in terms of population density in the world.
She explained that more than 7.1 million Sudanese have been displaced within the country since April 2023, and that 1.9 million Sudanese have migrated to neighboring countries.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) indicated that approximately 1.7 million people in Gaza (75 percent of the population) were displaced due to the war in the Strip by the end of 2023.
For his part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said that countless humanitarian tragedies lie behind these increasingly large numbers, adding that these tragedies must urge the international community to take urgent action to combat the root causes of the displacement problem.
