ARAB ORGANISATION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE UK (AOHR UK)
39th Session of the Human Rights Council
Side Event
Saudi Arabia sits on the UN Human Rights Council, whose mission it is to protect human rights across the globe. Many have highlighted this deep irony and asked what can be done to hold Saudi Arabia to account for its inexcusable human rights record. Arbitrary arrests, detentions and disappearnces have continued and increased in Saudi Arabia in a major crackdown on opposition groups, journalists and human rights defenders. Despite the government’s talk of reform, nothing has changed for those citizens who seek to exercise their fundamental rights of free speech and association. A leading panel of lawyers and experts will gather at the current session of the Human Rights Council to examine these serious violations and abuses that continue unabated, and to identify the steps and measures that should be taken by the Council and all States to guarantee the protection and release of those unjustly detained.
