The Gaza Strip is becoming an impossible place for dignified life, according to the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.
Lazzarini called on the Israeli occupation to allow UNRWA’s food convoys to enter northern Gaza and open additional land crossings to facilitate the delivery of aid, amid increasing international warnings of famine in the Strip.
Lazzarini, on his post on X, called on the countries of the world to increase pressure to implement the International Court of Justice’s order for the Israeli occupation to take all necessary measures to ensure that basic aid reaches the residents of the Gaza Strip.
He called on those countries to reconsider their decisions regarding funding the agency, stressing the urgent need to take bold measures to prevent famine in Gaza, and warning of the continued deterioration of living conditions for more than two million people.
Due to the six months of Israeli war and siege on Gaza, the population of Gaza, especially the Gaza and North governorates, are on the verge of famine, due to severe scarcity of food, water, medicine and fuel supplies, and the displacement of about two million Palestinians from the Strip, which has been besieged by the occupation for 17 years.
The right to food is guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which requires the international community and humanitarian institutions to work together to provide the necessary food and aid to the people of Gaza.
Since last October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation forces have been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands killed and injured, and causing catastrophic humanitarian conditions due to the destruction of vital facilities and the overflow of sewage in large areas.
Moreover, since the beginning of the war, the occupation cut off all supplies of electricity, water, fuel and food to the residents of the Gaza Strip, bombed bakeries, factories, stores, water stations and tanks, and destroyed the infrastructure.
